I had the best night of sleep I could ever remember. When I woke I couldn’t remember my dreams, but I was left with a pleasant feeling, as if for the first time in my life everything was right. Then I noticed Sage was missing. I was alone on the couch. I thought maybe she was in the bathroom, but there was a note on the coffee table. With a sense of dread, I picked it up.
Knox- Had to head into work early this morning. Didn’t want to wake you.
Call me when you wake up. –Sage
P.S. Did you know you drool in your sleep? JK ;)
The note was handwritten on Star Wars stationary. I smiled. Maybe life wasn’t so bad. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and checked my watch. It was almost noon. Last night played in my head over and over. I wanted to focus on my time with Sage, but images of wandering around the city flashed through my mind like a bad dream.
I forced myself off the couch and went to the kitchen. I poured a glass of water. My mouth felt like cotton. As sweet as fucking Sage was it did nothing to prevent the brutal hangover from my careless drinking.
I finished off the glass of water and poured a second. I decided to call Sage immediately. I didn’t want her to think I was blowing her off. I put on my pants and searched the pockets. Then I remembered that I’d tossed my phone into the street in a fit of drunken stupidity.
I looked around. Sage didn’t have a landline. Even if she had owned one, I didn’t know her phone number off the top of my head. I had this sinking feeling that if I didn’t get in touch with Sage soon she would think that I didn’t want to see her again.
It was almost noon. I decided to head down to her office and ask her out to lunch. I’d tell her I’d lost my phone last night. She’d understand.
I pulled on my boots and headed out the door. Her office was a short walk from her apartment, but I couldn’t stand the sounds of the city, or the blinding light. It cut through my head like a scalpel. I wished I had my sunglasses. I could barely stand it.
I flagged down a taxi and had him drive me half a mile to Sage’s office. He looked bewildered as to why I’d have him drive me such a short distance. When I threw a hundred dollar bill at him, the look vanished. He was thanking me profusely as I slammed the taxi door shut.
I walked into Sage’s office. The place was modern. To my left was an employee-only spa. A sign out front said: Massages by Appointment Only. My father’s company was a multibillion dollar business and they didn’t have a private spa. This place looked much smaller than my old man’s business. A lot of tech companies want to create an anti-corporate atmosphere, so they create perks for their employees like spas.
